Jeg har en sterk misstanke om at alt vi trenger å vite om Arne Treholt og hans historie som spion, finnes i tv-serien The West Wing (Presidenten på norsk).
Episoden Somebody’s Going to Emergency, Somebody’s Going to Jail inneholder et subplot om en amerikansk spion som Sam Seaborn (en av presidentens rådgivere) er overbevist om at er uskyldig dømt. Etter litt graving kommer det frem at det finnes masse beviser mot denne spionen. Bevisene holdes fremdeles hemmelige. Og her lar jeg National Security Advisor Dr. Nancy McNally fortelle Sam, og deg kjære leser, hvorfor jeg tror Arne Treholt er skyldig i mye mer enn det han vil innrømme:
SAM You're telling me that we cracked some obscure Russian code and suddenly we learned Gault was a spy? NANCY Yes. SAM That's crap. If the FBI had proof on Gault they would have told the world about it. NANCY No they wouldn't have, Sam. SAM Nancy... NANCY No they wouldn't have, neither would the NSA, neither would Central Intelligence. You don't show someone you've broken their ciphers unless you have to. Gault was long dead. But before he was, he was an agent called "Black Water". He was a delegate at Yalta. And he returned to the U.S. by way of Rostov where he was awarded the Order of Lenin.
